In Indiana, you must at least have a high school diploma or its equivalent if you plan to become an electrician. Since Indiana does not have a statewide electrician license the requirements are different in each county and state. Therefore, it is advised that you contact the local town or county where you want to work and ask them for the specific requirements as imposed by the municipality. Within each of these areas the Indiana Department of Fire and Building Safety sets the rules for becoming an electrician.
While some states might ask for work experience under the supervision of a licensed electrician, others might just ask you to take the NEC code exam. Additionally, Indiana does not have reciprocity agreements with any state unfortunately.
Once you get your license you can legally work as an electrician in that particular county or state. You can also try to become a master electrician, which is the highest position one can achieve in this career, by following all the requirements and specializing in a particular field of interest. You can submit the application once all the requirements are met and take the exam if the application is accepted.
Once you become a master electrician, you will get a high salary however, you will have a lot more responsibilities. You can start your own company, have apprentice and journeyman electricians work for you and become a consultant on electrical plans for buildings and houses.
